Tutu supports targeted sanctions PDF Print E-mail

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu told European Union lawmakers during a hearing on Darfur that sanctions such as those used against South Africa during apartheid should be imposed on the Sudanese government, reported Reuters.

"I support wholeheartedly the imposition, in the face of intransigence, of specific targeted sanctions on Khartoum", said Tutu. "Especially when they are targeted, sanctions are effective, they worked for us... Sanctions were a very important weapon for us”.

Some of the measures Tutu suggested the EU and the international community should take are:

  • to ban Sudanese ministers and senior officials from travelling
  • to impose an embargo on the funds of senior officials
  • for the EU to urge their companies from operating in Sudan
  • to impose a no-fly zone over Darfur.
