It may be that there are already a group of you who would like to start a campaign together. If not, there are a number of ways to drum up interest. Design and put up posters in the local area; in community centres, sports centres, newsagents, shops, cafes, religious places of worship, anywhere you can think that would be appropriate. Leave some contact details on the posters, or flyers, and see who gets in touch. Contact local groups that already exist who may be interested in getting involved. These may include local Amnesty, Oxfam or other human rights organizations, women’s groups, refugee groups or community groups. Get in touch with your local newspaper, television or radio station to explain what you are trying to do and why. We can offer a local Darfuri to interview as a more interesting ‘hook’ for a journalist, and you could ask that they add your contact details at the end of the article for interested parties to get in touch. When you have assembled a team, hold a meeting to determine who is to be the target of your research; a local authority, university, trade union, or pension fund. Brief yourself and your team; It is prudent to have an understanding of the situation in Darfur and of the companies you are going to target (see the ‘research’ section for more details on this). |
