Lobby your institution asking it to engage and divest PDF Print E-mail

To raise questions about investment policy write to the Chair of the policy making body. Your letter should include the following:

• Your understanding of the investments they have

• A statement of your concern about these investments. Keep this section fairly brief.

• A request that the committee should consider:
- Swift engagement with the target company as to its operations in Sudan and whether they would be prepared to use its leverage with the Sudanese government to push for full deployment of the suggested 26,000 UNAMID peacekeepers to Darfur and for Khartoum to adhere to its international agreements
- Divestment, should a period of engagement with the target company not lead to a change in behaviour and policy

• A question that requires a reply to your letter – for example, what action do they intend to take?

Presenting your case to your target institution

Submit your proposal to the person or body in charge of making investment policy.
You may not be able to submit the proposal yourself, as you may not be allowed to speak at the relevant council or body who makes the decision, so you will need to find someone who can. This may be a student union president or local councillor.

Make sure that whoever speaks in council has a sound understanding of the situation in Darfur and institutional finances. Do get in touch with us before this stage ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) as we know the arguements that tend to be put forward and how to rebut them.

Be clear about your demands: swift engagement with the company concerned and divestment.
