UBS has announced that it will be the lead underwriter for PetroChina’s debut on the Shanghai stock exchange. PetroChina is the listed arm of China National Petroleum Corporation, the largest and most problematic player in Sudan’s oil industry. UN force authorised for Darfur

Last night’s UN Security Council resolution mandating over 19,000 troops and over 6,000 police for Darfur, with authorisation to use force to protect civilians, has been welcomed by campaigners as a landmark step in the right direction. Aegis has been calling for a force of over 25,000 troops with a Chapter VII mandate since publishing a dossier on the issue in May 2005.

Do you know what your money is being spent on?

Could you be indirectly financing the genocide in Darfur? That’s quite a sobering thought. It’s also a distinct possibility. Today, Aegis Trust and partners launch an international campaign for the divestment of funds, including your pension and your savings, that are invested in foreign companies whose revenues support the Sudanese Government. Adverts are appearing in the Guardian, New Statesman and Amnesty magazine in the UK, in Walrus and Le Devoir in Canada, in the Guardian and the Mail in South Africa, and in Italy over the next few days.
