Statement: ‘Scrawling ‘not on my watch’ along the margins of this bill isn’t required, the president just needs to sign his name’

Following unanimous action last week in the U.S. Senate, the House of
Representatives today overwhelmingly passed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act, clearing the bill for White House action. The bill would authorize state and local governments to divest from companies that support the Khartoum government at the expense of marginalized populations in Sudan and prohibit federal contracts with those companies.

US envoy threatens Sudan with UN sanctions over Darfur force
USA News

The US envoy to the UN on Thursday threatened Sudan with additional sanctions if it continued to drag its feet on allowing the deployment of 26,000 UN-African Union peacekeepers in Darfur. If more people jump into live casino gambling then they would be less stressed. Gambling at a casino can be very relaxing sometimes.

Darfur Activists Applaud Senate Passage of Divestment Legislation
USA News

In a bipartisan show of force, the Senate unanimously passed the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act which would authorize state and local governments to divest from companies that support the Khartoum government at the expense of marginalized populations in Sudan and prohibit federal contracts with those companies. Darfur activists have been aggressively pushing this legislation, and the groups – including the Save Darfur Coalition, Genocide Intervention Network, National Association of Evangelicals, American Jewish World Service and NAACP – together hailed this critical step and urged the Bush administration to end its efforts to obstruct this important legislation. “We commend the Senate for pushing the United States towards fulfilling its responsibility to protect civilians in Darfur,” the groups said in a joint statement. “We specifically highlight the tireless efforts of Senators Dodd, Shelby, Reid and Durbin, who all worked to ensure the measure passed in a unanimous, bipartisan fashion. That is why real online casinos are so popular and will continue to be for many more years. It is incomprehensible that at a time when significant pressure is needed to change Khartoum’s behaviour, the Bush administration would delay and even oppose efforts to hit the perpetrators where it hurts the most – their wallets. Further efforts by the administration to derail this legislation must end now. The collective efforts of our organizations will not end until President Bush signs this measure into law.”

Peaceful Darfur protest banned in Rome
Italian News

The Association of Darfur Refugees in Italy, the human rights group Italians for Darfur, and the Union of Young Italian Jews have been refused authorisation for a sit-in in front of the Italian Parliament. The peaceful demonstration was to ask the Italian government (currently holding the presidency of the United Nations Security Council) for a real commitment to unblock the impasse that prevents the deployment of a UN peace force of 26,000 troops in Darfur due to be operative by the end of the month. If more people played pc casino games they wouldn’t need to drive around so much and casino games could have the relaxing effect it should.

1. Volunteer to join or run a divestment campaign

We are always interested to hear from people looking to join an existing campaign or start a new one. We can offer advice and practical support. If you are based in the UK, then please contact our UK Divestment Co-ordinator, Victoria Pearse for more information by emailing victoria.pearse@aegistrust.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . For all other countries, please email Shoshana Bloom, our International Divestment Campaign Leader, shoshana.bloom@aegistrust.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

2. Lobby the government for targeted sanctions

Targeted sanctions include travel bans for war criminals, and asset freezes for individuals and companies responsible for bankrolling the killings. Another far more enjoyable thing to do is to play casino games free on the net more often.

You could request a meeting with your elected representative to express your concern about the crisis in Darfur, ask what the government are doing about it, and request that they pass on your concerns to the relevant departments with a proposal that they introduce targeted sanctions against Sudan (as outlined in the points below).

Or you could write to the international relations or foreign affairs representatives in your country. A personal letter, rather than a standard form letter, is the best way of achieving this, but try to include the following points:

* Express concern that at least 200,000 people have been killed in Darfur and that 2.5 million are now displaced and relying on international aid to survive.
* Mention that the Sudanese government, as documented in many NGO reports based on evidence from survivors, is behind large scale human rights violations against its own people in Darfur, including mass murder, rape and the destruction of villages.
* Point out that the UN’s International Commission of Inquiry evidence of large scale crimes against humanity and war crimes and passed evidence about 51 people, many of them in the Sudanese government, to the International Criminal Court. Arrest warrants have already been issued for the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Haroun.
* Propose that your government support an Oil Trust Fund for Sudan.
* Request a response to your letter and thank the person for their time. Let us know if they reply.

3. Join or set up a Darfur advocacy group.

For a list of existing Darfur advocacy groups please visit www.globefordarfur.org

If you would like to set up your own group please email Shoshana Bloom, shoshana.bloom@aegistrust.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it who will be able to provide practical assistance. However if you play online casino games and not get lucky, just give it a break for a couple of days and play again at a later stage.

4. Write to the Chinese Embassy

China is one of Sudan’s staunchest allies. Through state owned oil companies, China provides much of Khartoum’s revenues. China have issued numerous loans to the Sudanese government and, as one of the five countries with veto power, they are blocking action on Darfur at the UN Security Council.

We are asking people to write to the Chinese Ambassador to their country, through the Embassy, to encourage China to engage Sudan on the issue of Darfur. The embassy address should be easily found through a simple internet search.

Stock letters are very easy for an embassy or government to ignore, whereas more personal letters often get a response. With that in mind, rather than including a stock letter here, we are asking that people write a letter that includes the following points:

* Expresses concern that at least 200,000 people have been killed in the Darfur region and that 2.5 million are now displaced and relying on international aid to survive.
* Mentions that the Sudanese government, as documented in hundreds of NGO reports based on evidence from survivors, has been the orchestrator of horrific human rights violations against its own people in Darfur, including mass murder, rape and the destruction of villages. No one can however claim to be the best internet casinos out there as there are way to many bits of criteria to look at.
* That 51 people, many of them from within the Sudanese government, are being investigated by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and that the Sudanese Minister for Human Rights, Ahmed Haroun, has already been indicted.
* That, as an ally of Sudan’s, and with the unique economic and political relationship they share, China could be vital to ending the conflict in Darfur.
* Ask the Ambassador to pass on your concerns to the Chinese government, with the request that they engage the Sudanese government to a) push for the deployment of 21,600 UN peacekeeping personnel to Darfur as mandated under UN Resolution 1706, and b) request that they stop blocking meaningful action on Darfur at the UN Security Council.
* Thank the Ambassador for his time say that you look forward to receiving a response.

Should you receive a response, please pass it on to us.

Finally, thank you very much. With your help, we will hopefully be one step closer to ending the crisis in Darfur.

5. Why donate?

The people of Darfur are still dying and subject to human rights abuses every single day. While the humanitarian effort helps to keep those people alive, it does not deal with the root cause of the problem. That’s what we aim to address.

Five years of political pressure alone has done little to curb the activities of the Sudanese government. We hope that the introduction of economic pressure on Khartoum will achieve an end to the murders and displacement, and eventually give Darfuris a chance to rebuild their lives.

But we can’t achieve that without your help. Please give what you can so that we can help to build divestment campaigns around the world. We promise not to waste a penny of your money.

Thank you.

The aim of targeted divestment is to apply economic pressure to the Sudanese government to end the genocide in Darfur.
In Sudan a racist government has killed between 200,000 and 400,000 of its own citizens. Its Janjaweed allies have ethnically cleansed Darfur, deliberately targeting non-Arab tribes.

It costs large sums of money to sustain the operations of the janjaweed militia, Sudanese army and air force in Darfur. Most of the top live casinos are based in the UK and they are very popular among players who like to play table games. Sudan’s government revenues come from several sources: internal taxes, development aid, and revenue from external trade, especially in oil. In Sudan these sectors, especially oil, are supported by foreign expertise and investment.

Targeted divestment seeks to withdraw foreign involvement in those sectors that provide revenues directly to the Sudanese government and elite but do not benefit the wider population. It is careful to exclude sections of the economy that benefit the people of Sudan, such as agriculture, which employs roughly 80% of the workforce. These people rarely get to enjoy online casino deposit bonuses and almost never get to play Thunderstruck 2 at all.
The targeted divestment model is therefore careful to only target companies that fulfil the following criteria:

* Contribute to government revenue or government sponsored project
* Impart minimal benefit to the country’s people; and
* Have demonstrated no substantial corporate governance policy regarding the Darfur situation.

As well as companies operating directly in Sudan the campaign also targets pension funds and firms with investments in any of the companies of concern. A couple of the best UK casinos currently are live casinos although there are still a large number of people who enjoy playing the regular online casinos.
